March is National Women’s Month and to celebrate, this week we will be highlighting Opal.
Opal is an Operating Engineer with Local #3 Union District 80 and has been
in the union for 15 years. Opal’s motto is no matter what you’re doing in life,
just be safe while doing it, because your life can change in an instant.
What’s your name?
What union are you affiliated with and how long have you been a member?
I’m a Journeyman Operating Engineer with Local #3 Union District 80. I’ve been in the union 15 years now.
Who do you work for?
I work for Broward Builders Construction, I’m their Director of Safety.
What made you want to join a union?
I joined the union because I wanted to be a part of something that changes America, one road, one brick, and one worker at a time.
What is your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of my job is loving what I do and sending these workers safely home to their family and loved ones.
What are you most proud of at your job? What is your most significant achievement/favorite project?
I am most proud of being part of a family here at Broward Builders. We treat each other like a family.
My most significant achievement is being able to continue my education in my field.
My favorite project was working in Clearlake, CA doing the fire clean up with the company A.J. Diani. I learned not to take life for granted and that “things can be replaced”. I was honored to be a part of the process to make things better for the fire victim families and to clean up their property so they could start to rebuild and start making new memories.
What do you want other women to know if they join the trades?
I want other women to know that times have changed. The “Good Ole Boys” club is changing for the better. Women are gaining more respect and there are some genuine Journeymen that are willing to train us the RIGHT way.
What do you like to do outside of work?
Outside of work, I love to travel, take cruises, exercise, meet positive people, and feed and clothe the homeless. I also love riding my motorcycle.
