The world seems so different now compared to less than a month ago… the economy was strong, people had jobs, and family and friends were able to enjoy time together. Even though things have changed, it doesn’t mean we still can’t be positive, we just have to look at things differently.

For example, households are now experiencing at least one or two family members who have become unemployed. Yes, it’s tough, but the positive is that you are not alone. But, the biggest question is “Now what?”

>> We want to help you see the light at the end of the tunnel. Here are some tips from BALANCE, our Financial Fitness Partner, to help you through this time.

stay positive
Try to stay positive

Navigating the time between jobs is frustrating. Some days you may even feel like you’ll never get hired again. It’s important to acknowledge these feelings, but also try not to let them weigh you down. If you’re active, maintaining a regular exercise routine can lift your spirits. Have a fun hobby? Devoting more time to it will keep you content.

To Do List
Create simple to-do lists

Unemployment means you now have an abundance of free time. If you’re happy to relax every day, this is great news. But if you thrive on being busy, make a list of easy things you can do daily. Whether it’s cleaning the house, getting things done, no matter how trivial they may seem, will give you a sense of accomplishment.

Re-examine your budget

If you’re eligible, file for unemployment as soon as possible. The funds will probably only be a fraction of what you were earning, but they can keep you afloat as you start your new frugal lifestyle.

Take a look at your budget and identify areas where you can cut back. Yes, you will have to avoid certain purchases and start comparison-shopping, but this can actually be a good thing. Discovering that you’re able to survive with less stuff is a very empowering feeling.

Monetize your hobbies

Like to craft? Start an Etsy shop. Like to exercise? Exercise at home. Thanks to online marketplaces and smartphones, making money off of your hobbies is easier than ever. If you’ve ever thought about turning your passion into a paycheck, unemployment is the perfect time to try.
